Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I pledge allegiance to myself and who I want to be..." Each day, we begin our class with a promise that helps my students focus on what they want to do and to learn today to make their future dreams a reality. It's a reminder that we start each day with a positive attitude. We know that there will be challenges, but we also know that we can handle them. We can't control our circumstances, but we do control how we respond to them.

"I can't wait to make a mistake!" From day one, we foster a safe community of learners in our room.

If a student doesn't feel comfortable, they won't try anything new. We are all learners, and support each other in taking risks and making mistakes, because we know that is where the real learning happens. Ours is a Title I school, serving a largely immigrant, Latino population, in a densely-populated urban city. Statistically destined to drop out before they complete high school, my students aspire to go beyond the stereotypes, and be the first college graduates in their family. There are no shortcuts!

My Project

My students have been working all year from home. Many of them have just started coming back to school in person. One of our many health protocols is that students keep their own classroom materials and do not share them with others.

In a year like no other, the challenges may just keep coming; but in our class, we are problem solvers!

Knowing how to protect ourselves and each other, we make the best of our new normal situation. That means that each student needs some basic classroom materials and math manipulatives that they can call their own.

We may have shared in the past, but that's just not going to work right now. So, I want to make sure that each child has the resources that they each need to be successful in all areas, particularly math. It becomes an issue of equity and I can certainly strive to provide each student what they need to make that success more readily attainable.
