Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a blank slate. In Year One Kindergarten, I get many students that have never been to school before. It's my job to show them that school is awesome, learning is fun, and sitting at your desk all day is not what we do! We cover a lot of academics, along with social and emotional learning each day.

My school believes in "Kindergarten to College," which is a huge motivator for our families, most of whom live near the poverty line.

It is my privilege to begin their journey to success with hands-on learning and interactive lessons.

My Project

I am making the switch in my Year One Kindergarten classroom from rotating centers that are timed to self-guided centers. My students will now be responsible for their learning throughout the week. My students will learn independence and accountability and I will be able to work with customized small groups each day for as long as I need to. This change in routine will benefit my students for years to come as they begin to learn to manage and organize their own learning.

This change allows me to bring in more STEM centers for my students.

Since the students will no longer be stuck at a center for a short amount of time, they will be able to work on STEM projects for as long as they need to. The bears, clips, and unifix cubes will be used throughout the year for centers based on sorting, building, measuring, and problem solving.

The retractable dry erase markers will help the students mark off their tasks on their checklist. These markers will dry out slower than markers that need a cap and will last the students throughout the year. I am so excited to bring this change to my classroom and I look forward to giving my students the skills they need to manage their learning throughout their educational careers.
