Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a school with an accelerated track for high achievers and a robust arts program including a steel pan band. The school admits students from across Brooklyn and Queens and serves grades 5 to 8. Most students arrive in sixth grade, but families concerned about competition for good middle schools may want to get a leg up by applying for fifth grade.

My students are motivated, self-driven, and are always excited about learning mathematics on a daily basis.

The highest achievers are placed in an accelerated program after sixth grade, which includes honors classes in seventh grade and Regents courses in algebra and living environment in eighth grade.

My students are always out performing their peers in other classes based on the engaging, activity based, rich curriculum that fosters critical thinking and allow my students to use the inquiry approach to investigate math task given.

My Project

Students learn better when they’re engaged, and manipulatives in the classroom make it easy for kids to get excited.

Struggling students, including those with learning disabilities, are consistently found to benefit from instruction that is explicit and systematic using math manipulative.

Using Nasco mathematics manipulative and geometry set and models offers many benefits. Just as a picture can be worth a thousand words, these math manipulative will provide visual representation of ideas, helping students to know and to understand mathematics.

Manipulative enhance the abilities of students at all levels to

reason and communicate. Working with manipulatives deepens understanding of concepts and relationships, makes skills practice meaningful, and leads to retention and application of information in new problem-solving situations. In turn, the valuable time spent on manipulative- and model-based lessons has the sustained, long-term effect of building student confidence and deepening mathematics understanding.
