My Students

I have the most amazing class of fifth graders. They are hard workers with a variety of backgrounds. They bring their unique qualities to build a classroom and community of caring individuals. We live in a bedroom community to a larger city. Most of our class is within walking distance to our school.

Critical thinking is a goal for our students this year.

Math manipulatives will create thinkers that will grow into adults that will think critically. It will create an environment where students can move from concrete thinking to abstract thinking with support.

My Project

I have been sharing math manipulatives with the teacher next door until this year when she moved grades. I am missing the opportunity to have students use concrete tools to focus their mathematical thinking.

Students need the time and tools to create meaning when they move from concrete mathematical concepts to more abstract thinking.

Having a set of math manipulatives would be beneficial for their growth.

Many 5th grade students need reinforcement that manipulatives would give them. I hope to make them available to any student who wishes to use them to clarify their thinking. Math is vital to adulthood and I need to ensure that students are competent.
