My Students

My 2nd/3rd grade students are amazing! This year I'm "looping" with my previous class of 1st/2nd graders and we need resources that match our new grade level benchmarks, the 3rd grade standards. Can you help us?

My inner-city, public school students are fun-loving and curious.

Many students in my class have overcome obstacles (single parent, teenage mom, incarcerated family member, neighborhood violence, poverty, etc.) and come into my classroom energetic and ready to learn. Now is the time to encourage problem solving and creativity. I've been fortunate to have taught the majority of my class for 1-3 years, due to unusual enrollment at our school. I've built a great rapport with the children and their families. I know EXACTLY what my students need in order to improve their areas of weakness.

My Project

I'm asking for your help in supplying my classroom with 3rd grade math materials to improve my students academic vocabulary, problem solving strategies, and attitude towards math. The 20 book math library will provide rich literature with colorful bright pages to explain abstract concepts like fractions and division through real-life application. The math board games will support my classroom instruction of encouraging "math talk" and using multiple strategies to solve problems. Board games are also fun so the kids will be learning and enjoying math while practicing. Shh! Don't tell them they're learning. They just think they're "playing".

This summer I completed 6 hours of graduate level mathematic training for primary teachers.

The courses refocused my efforts and encouraged me to guide my class to THINK and EXPLAIN their thoughts. I feel re-energized to teach math. I know with your help, I will have the materials to help my students be successful and confident. We can't prepare our children for every district, state, or national test, but we can arm them with the tools of critical thinking, problem solving, and perseverance.
