My Students

Help students in the lifeskills class and their families discover how important and fun math is! Math Mania will be a time for parents and guardians to become more involved in their child's math education.

I am a middle level math teacher at a rural public school in New York State.

I have been collaborating with a special education teacher to bring a family math program to the lifeskills classroom. There are nine students with math and reading abilities from second grade and up. These students come from high-need families and many of the students live with a single parent, grandparents, or extended family. These families do not have the opportunity or means to purchase items or games that will enhance their child's math skills that will help them gain employment in the future.

My Project

Educational research has shown that there is a link between parental involvement and improved educational achievement of children. Math Mania for families will be an opportunity for parents and guardians to see how important math is in their child's education. Families will engage in hands-on activities that will enhance the math ability of the special education students. There will be problem solving activities that will help these students with life skills such as counting money, working with fractions, and telling time. Families will be given games, activities, books, and manipulatives to take home and use to reinforce math concepts.

Please help make a difference in the lives of some very special young people.

Parental involvement is a very important part of a child's education and Math Mania for families will be a great opportunity for parents and guardians to see how important mathematics is as a life skill and how important math is for the future of their child.
