My Students

Remember how your parents helped you to learn about money by letting you pay for things at the store? Today's students aren't being afforded this opportunity because their mom and dad (and teacher, I admit) rarely pay with cash. So, in class, students are struggling all year to understand money.

I teach 22 wonderful second-graders.

They are enthusiastic knowledge seekers and love nothing more than hands-on, real-world learning. I have a culturally and academically diverse group of students. Our school and our district are focused on preparing our students for the real world. We seek to empower students and teach them skills they will need throughout life such as collaboration, problem-solving, and critical thinking. While we are training students to be able to find the answers to the problems with which they are presented, being able to work with money is a foundational skill that I believe is still essential for our students to master.

My Project

Students will use these materials in both whole-class and small-group situations. The whiteboards will help me to engage all of my students in practice. The stamps and ink pads will be great for individualized instruction for each student. These will be great tools for remediation, allowing students extra practice. The money discovery can will be used as a station during math workshop to give smaller groups of students practice that they can complete together with the support of a classmate. The money discovery activities, as well as the money bingo game, will help students practice adding up quantities of coins, which they really struggle to do. The large magnetic money will be a great visual for students, especially helpful as they struggle to differentiate the nickel, dime, and quarter. Together, all of these resources will provide greater opportunities for my students to practice their money skills and more plentiful resources with which to do so.

By donating to my project, you will be helping me to provide my students more varied opportunities to practice identifying and counting money.

Often, with math, the key to success for teachers and students is being able to present the lesson in a different way. With the presence of these tools in my classroom, my students and I will have a large toolkit at our disposal to ensure that all students are able to develop an understanding of money that is vital to their future success in life.
