Math Is All Fun and Games: Learning Through Playing
Help me give my students math manipulatives and games in order to help then learn to love and appreciate math and how it’s used in everyday situations.
I am requesting several math games and manipulatives to help my students learn math. These games will allow my students to become more math-fluent in areas where they need the most help: basic arithmetic.
My students come from homes where school is not necessarily valued and learning isn’t their top priority.
I know this is a struggle for many of my students. Getting their attention to focus on math during class is a daily battle. They have more pressing concerns. My goal is to give them a fun classroom where they feel safe, but also where they can learn with minimal effort. The best way to do this, in my opinion, is to offer them games and play. This makes the day feel fun, gets them excited about coming to my class, and will hopefully allow them to forget their problems for a little while.
My students are in a unique situation. We are at a day treatment center. They were not successful in their “regular” school and so are sent to us. Most of my kids are special needs, they come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and most of them are minority groups. These are kids with the deck stacked against them. And yet, they come to school and try to do better. They put as much attention towards their learning as they can, but some days that isn’t very much. I’m hoping to offer them a safe place in the world. And if I can do that and teach then math at the same time, that’s a win-win for everyone.
