My Students

I teach at a public, Title I Impact school in Savannah- Chatham County. My school currently has 90% of the population receiving free or reduced lunch. The word impact by definition means to "have a strong effect on someone or something." As a teacher, this is my goal each day: to make the greatest positive impact on my students.

My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds.

My school is certified for English Language Learners that have recently moved to this country. The students come from many different countries around the world. Most of our ESOL students were forced to leave their country of origin because of war, persecution, and/ or extreme poverty. Often times, these children come to us traumatized and find it difficult to adjust to their new surroundings. They are completely unfamiliar with the language and social norms of our country. Despite their plight, these children are expected to perform academically.

Regardless of being from a different country, a single-parent​ home, or a poverty-stricken neighborhood, my students are bright, energetic, and loving. My hope is to make the greatest impact on my students by offering them a safe and positive learning environment.

My Project

I recently discovered a classic dice game called Shut the Box during one of my recent travels. The idea of the game is to roll two dice and find a way to create a number 1-12 through addition or subtraction. Once you find the sum or difference, you close that number on the gameboard. This continues until you roll a pair of numbers that does not equal the numbers that remain standing on your board. The rules of the game are simple, but the learning potential is tremendous.

Many of my students struggle with basic math facts, which serve as the foundation for all other math concepts.

I have observed that students learn so much more when they are interacting with each other through a game or hands on activity. I employ this gaming strategy often in my classroom because students often lose motivation to learn when they are faced with independent paper and pencil work. Learning through games help students strategize and think on their feet. In addition, students are able to learn critical social skills through game play, which is often lost with the tight schedule of a typical school day.
