My Students

"The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing." -Henry Ford. In an all-girls classroom, I could hear a lot of questions like "Is this right?" or "Did I do this correctly?" Many of the girls in my classroom struggle with wanting to be perfect and mistake free, especially in math.

We have nineteen girls in our fourth grade classroom with a range of ability levels and backgrounds.

Our elementary school is located in a small town in South Carolina. I have noticed that many of my students are hesitant to take risks in math not because of a lack of knowledge or skill but fear of failure. In a Psychology Today article, "The Trouble with Bright Girls," Heidi Halvorson, PHD. states that, "Bright girls were much quicker to doubt their ability, to lose confidence, and to become less effective learners..." than boys of the same ability level and age. Bright girls tend to believe that their ability to do math (or not do math) is innate and unchangeable. They quickly believe right answers to mean "I'm smart!" and mistakes to mean "I'm dumb!" Our school has embraced the F.A.I.L. (First Attempt in Learning) approach where mistakes are seen as opportunities to grow, and I want to instill this unshakable confidence to take risks in math in each of my students!

My Project

I want to inspire my girls to grow their minds and confidence through hands-on math games that encourage learning by making mistakes and cooperating with others! My students need the Complete Set of Math Folder Games for Grades 4-5 that cover each of the major units in fourth grade standards, Division Machine Practice Game, Fractions Activity Station, and Write and Wipe Fraction Number Lines. The math station games are differentiated so that I can challenge my students on their ability levels. I will use these activities for independent practice and cooperative learning groups in stations. Each activity gives my students hands-on experience using problem solving skills. With a strong math foundation and opportunities to take risks, my students will continue to be successful in math as they progress through school and life. It is my passion to give my students the skills that they need for the future when they step out of my classroom!

These donations will enhance my students' love of learning for math and encourage them to take risks and become real-world problem solvers.

The girls will learn crucial math concepts while they learn valuable life lessons through fun and engaging math games. This love of math and confidence to solve difficult problems to overcome fear of failure will help each of the nineteen students in my class to become mighty girls for the rest of their lives!
