My Students

Math can seem dry and abstract to a second grader who wants to play. Using games based on money and spending, students will not only learn about money, they will practice their grade-level math skills and engage in critical thinking exercises. Using games just makes it better!

My students are 2nd graders in a New York City public school.

They are in a dual-language program where they are learning in both French and English. Half of the students speak English at home, and half of the students speak French at home, but in school they each spend half the day in each language. They are learning math in English.

My Project

Students will have a pre-defined time each week during which they will be able to play these math games in order to help them practice addition and subtraction, but also in order to build their financial literacy. Each game requires critical thinking and will have them practicing the skills they are learning in math lessons, such as adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, or adding with more than two addends. They will also be challenged to take their initial steps in financial literacy by being posed with concrete problems involving money, about which they have to think creatively. For example, the "Making Cents" game encourages children to think about creative ways to come up with a total, and both "Shopping Math - Money Problem Solving " and "Money Folder Game Library" have children solving complex math word problems. These games will provide a fun way for them to apply their math skills, and will reinforce what they learn in their lessons.

My students will have to think critically to win, and apply everything they are learning in math.

It is a great challenge that will help students work through math problems by themselves, and therefore get better at solving them!
