My Students

Students are in grades 2-6 and attend three different public elementary schools in Anchorage School District. Two out of the three schools are on 100% free and reduced lunch. One of the schools is a Russian Language Immersion School. Students come from many different backgrounds and for many English is not their first language. Students qualify for enrichment services that offer challenging curriculum outside the regular classroom. Once a week they attend the IGNITE (Including Gifted Needs In Today's Eduction) program at their school for two hours.

Students are eager for challenge and hands-on activities.

The goal of the IGNITE program is to engage students and spark their love of learning. These students are tomorrow's leaders!

My Project

Students will explore math concepts from a 3-D or visual spatial perspective while the 16 Habits of Mind are infused into each session with a particular focus on Persistence. The unit runs for one hour per week for a semester. Students are most engaged when they are able to manipulate objects or create something. A variety of challenging puzzles such as Rubik's cube and Knoodle provide an opportunity for students to work on a challenge and then participate in a discussion about which Habit of Mind they used to be successful.

The materials will be used to spark students imaginations and support their growing STEM skills.

One of the requested materials is KEVA Planks. According to KEVA's official site, "KEVA planks are an exceptionally versatile tool for teaching STEM concepts to children of any age or skill level. In fact, KEVA puts the STEAM in STEM (Art). Only one simple building block is used which allows for an infinite number of construction possibilities. Planks are assembled using various stacking techniques. Since gravity is the primary force acting on the blocks, compounding variables such as gluing skill or connector strength are eliminated. Construction progresses quickly so multiple trials or experiments can be conducted in the course of any challenge. Trial and error maximizes discovery." Students will look forward to a weekly challenge using the requested materials for this unit. Engagement is pathway to increasing students' STEM skills.
