My Students

Students learn in different ways. One challenge I have is getting students that have experienced frustrations in the past, to engage in math. They come to me with fences already put up from past failures and frustrations.

I teach in one of the most diverse middle schools in the United States.

I have students from different cultures, backgrounds, experiences, and opportunities. This creates both a joy and opportunity for me and my students. Given this, we have a wide achievement gap that is also hard to swallow. They are excited to learn and want to prove to me that they can be great mathematicians.

My Project

In working with diverse students who come to me at various stages of math understanding, I work hard to engage all of my students. Using strategies that allow me to reach more students helps me to teach more efficiently. I've found that using dry erase boards engage all of my students. They can show their work, work together to understand the steps they take, and engage their visual and kinesthetic learning realms. I have also seen how colors in notes helps in learning. It helps to organize notes and also makes note taking fun for my students. I have also requested markers for art projects. I am often able to engage students that are most frustrated with the traditional math instruction through math activities that involve art. I am looking forward to continuing to do that with new markers.

This project is about engaging all of my students with dry erase boards and markers.

The top students are already successful and don't need a hook, but it is my struggling students that I want to capture. Having dry erase boards and colorful markers makes learning more individualized and ensures that learning is fun. Making math fun creates engagement, engagement increases learning, and increased learning creates success.
