My Students

Many of our students were born right here in Buffalo, like their parents. But, the majority of our students are learning English as a second language, which includes many refugee families. Our students come from various countries; such as Burma, Thailand, The Congo, Afghanistan, and Somalia just to name a few. Their families often come to the United States with nothing, and have a difficult time preparing for the school year because of language barriers, and lack of resources. Our students have such diverse backgrounds and home life, and come together to share the same school environment every day.

They are an energetic group who learn best by doing, experiencing, and being involved!

My Project

In my years teaching second grade math, I have found that the skill all students need the most practice with is math fluency strategies. The challenge they face is learning rigorous math material with the added hurtle of their fluency needs still being developed. Students often get frustrated when they have to learn difficult second grade math concepts, while they are still struggling to gain fluency in their math facts.

My project is focused on making math fluency fun.

My students need the opportunity to develop a love for learning, specifically learning basic addition and subtraction skills. The focus of this project is to give them math focused games that will get the students excited and engaged in the material they need so much during this transitional year in their school career.
