I work in a rural school district in Southeast Missouri. My students come from a variety of backgrounds where poverty is a common theme. Many of my students live with and are being raised by their grandparents or by foster parents.
Despite the struggles that many of my students face at home, they still come to school each day eager to learn.
It amazes me - the courage that it takes for some of them to have a smile on their face each day. Some have suffered more loss than I can even begin to fathom. My students this year have a liveliness that can't be bottled up! They bring our classroom to life!
My Project
I teach math in both whole group and in small group. During small group, I am able to work with students on a one-to-one basis. While I am working with students, it is important that I have engaging materials at the other stations to keep students actively practicing their math skills and becoming more fluent mathematicians!
I find that students are more engaged in the learning process when they are having fun!
These station materials will help ensure that my students are actively engaged and practicing math facts and fluency. The materials I have chosen will also help strengthen my students' knowledge of number sense and enhance mental math strategies.
