Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classrooms are full of English Language Learners, Special Education, and Students with Interrupted Formal Education. I have had classrooms of 30+ students speaking 7 different languages. This makes group dynamics and sharing mathematic ideas difficult, and can stifle rich math experiences.

My ninth grade Algebra students are all immigrants from around the world, struggling to make sense of their new lives and environment.

The diverse cultures give a great opportunity for sharing and building their global awareness, but it also can cause deep frustrations with language barriers in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Combined with their varied levels of math education - some having less than two years of math experience and even struggling with basic addition and subtraction - it is difficult to find opportunities for rich math discussions and interactions. Often it's easiest to partner students up with others from their own country, but I would much prefer a single table represent the Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, Yemen, and Guinea. This is especially important when there are students with no common language. I want productive collaborative math challenges to bridge language barriers and enrich their learning experience.

My Project

By giving each student a dry erase marker and individual whiteboards, we give students more opportunity to communicate math ideas and find ways to engage in problem-solving and discussion. They can use them to communicate math ideas with the teacher and with peers, show the teacher what they know in pop-quiz sessions, and create immediate feedback loops between teacher and students to inform the direction of the class. Another important part of their learning experience is in their notebook. I have very structured note-taking policies that help students create an effective math resource no matter what level of literacy they have achieved. The stamps will be an effective feedback item for me to guide them in developing their note-taking skills. And no matter what age you are, every student likes a stamp of achievement!

You are enabling students to find alternate means of communication and engagement where normally they would have no voice.

Giving them another way of expressing thoughts and ideas makes the classroom richer and more dynamic for every member, and allows even that one student with no common language with me or other students to communicate, derive meaning, and feel like a member of the class.
