Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These third graders are ready to learn English and their academic subjects! Imagine learning information in a new language. My students work twice as hard to understand the new language and use it to learn science, social studies, math, reading, and writing. I know how hard they work because I was one of them when I was in school. My students give all their heart into learning and they are thankful for the opportunity to succeed. My students are English Language Learners that will be taking major tests this year: NYSESLAT for their English language proficiency and the ELA and Math state tests. As third graders they are transitioning from early childhood to upper elementary and act as role models for the lower grades. As good role models they are reading buddies for the Kindergarten and First grade students. They also serve as mentors for the second graders helping them transition to third grade. My students are proud of their culture and have the American spirit to dream and work hard. They want a chance to learn and grow up to be productive citizens.

My Project

These math centers will give my students the opportunity to practice their math skills with a hands-on approach. During math workshop students work in needs based groups. During this time students work on different skills in different centers. The math games will be a great center activity for students to work in groups as they learn multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, place value, problem solving, algebra, data and measurement. While students are engaged in their centers, I am able to work on small group instruction with a small group of students. Our math curriculum uses many worksheets that often is boring; so, these math center activities will really motivate my students to work during math workshop. These math centers will be of great use during our review days as well as our Fun Fridays. The colorful bins will help organize the math center materials so that students can be independent in getting their centers and keeping them organized.
