I teach at a rural, Title I school. Almost 100% of students receive free or reduced lunches. My student population includes, foster situations, parent or parents who are incarcerated, grandparents raising grandchildren, emotional needs, and those who learn differently.
I strive to not let their success be determined by their zip code.
I have students whose basic needs are met and those whose are not. Our school's meals are for those who need them, counseling, clothing, school supplies, and extra-curricular opportunities to try to reach all our families.
My students deserve a learning environment that encourages collaboration.
My Project
My fourth grade students struggle with basic number sense. My students need this resource to increase their fundamental understanding of number sense. Number sense is prevalent in each day life.
Children often want to solve the problems while reading, or discuss possibilities.Reading picture books with children almost always leads to rich discussions.
Using picture books that focus on mathematical concepts are no different.
Picture books can spark children’s mathematical imaginations in ways that textbooks and workbooks often don’t. Picture books can also help students who love to read—but think math isn’t their thing—experience the wonder of math in the same way they already enjoy the wonder of books.
