My Students

As my students come from diverse backgrounds and are English Language Learners, the use of visual materials and interactive videos greatly enhance their learning. In Language Arts, vocabulary pictures and unit introductions give background knowledge and context to these diverse learners.

My students are an enthusiastic second-grade class at an elementary school in Canoga Park, California.

The students primarily come from low-income families where English is not the main language spoken in the home. It is important to engage them on a visual level to support their vocabulary and concept development. Also, the majority of my students are boys and they in particular would benefit from increased visual instruction.

My Project

My students need a laptop to enhance classroom instruction in Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. Through the use of a laptop connected to a projector, these students will be able to make connections between visual presentations facilitated by this technology and the curriculum. Their mathematics learning will come to life on the big screen and be much more interactive. For example, animations can illustrate mathematical concepts in ways that allow students to grasp ideas much more quickly. I can also make and use PowerPoint presentations to review concepts and bring a visual element to what I am teaching.

This technology will have a tremendous impact on student learning and development.

Students will benefit from enhanced visual presentations with the laptop and be more engaged as a result. Although many of them have not had much access to computers, this project will introduce them to technology via media-based learning.
