Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The students at P.S.89 face multiple challenges. A good majority receive free or reduced price lunches due to limited resources. Meeting the needs of the diversified group where almost 50% of the student body consists of English Language Learners is particularly challenging. The limitations of the school's resources parallel that of some of the homes the students come from. Currently, the school shares its building with another Middle School while awaiting completion of construction on our own building. This arrangement requires that Grades 3 through 8 share the first floor of the school; students engage in Physical Education in their classes, library materials are housed within a few classrooms, and technology is extremely limited. Classrooms are shared and there is no computer lab. The increased needs of our Middle School students are minimally addressed as a result of physical and material restrictions.

Students need workspace and materials. I have been able to muster up access to a single desktop computer and would like to use that as a base for increased learning opportunities. There are so many needs due to the lack of resources both material and immaterial in nature.

Students will have to continue to endure some of the conditions they are facing until we are housed in a new building. However, the limits on do not have to severely restrict their learning experiences and opportunities. Providing the Mighty Math and Math Blaster software will provide extra support for their math concepts and skills, the whiteboards and dry erase sentence strips, ceiling hangers, and clips will help students to review and explore information in a manner suitable for their circumstances. Mobile student display opportunities will help reinforce student pride in their work, engage in lessons interactively and increase their love of learning.

Confidence and improved academic performance in math are only two benefits that will result from these additional aides. Thank you in advance for caring enough to give.
