Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What makes a child special? Their smile? The special way they have of showing you they are proud of their work while still looking "cool" in front of their friends? The way their hand slips into yours in the lunch-line because they still need reassurance? All of these things and a thousand more make my class special to me. They are a wonderful group of children that just need to know that the world is a welcoming place for people of different abilities and strengths. These kids are working so hard and are accomplishing so much.

Class 302 is an eclectic mix.

There are kids with special needs and there are kids who struggle with challenging life circumstances. There are doctors, and writers, scientists and artists in this class. There are gifted kids who can write a masterpiece about what they want to do in their future and others who can illustrate that masterpiece. Regardless of their abilities all of these children have talent. All they need is a chance, and Donors Choose and You, can be that chance!

My Project

Many of my students struggle in math but I believe that we can break down learning barriers through play.

Albert Einstein said: "“Play is the highest form of research.”

When my students are playing a game or are feeling relaxed they are more receptive to new information and can process that information more effectively. Math can be an intense, rigorous subject for many of my students. Providing opportunities for learning through play will help them achieve those "Aha!" moments that every teacher lives for.

In our classroom we are working on our addition and subtraction math facts so I chose to include the giant soft cubes with dots to aid students in developing this skill. Students can roll the dice and add or subtract the numbers shown. They can also be used in multiplication. They can take one dice, roll it, then roll it again. The first roll can be the number of groups and the second roll can be the number in each group.

I also included the "I Have Who Has" Math game because I want students to work in a cooperative group. My goal is to support students in this game but as they become more confident they can support each other. Students will be working on addition, subtraction, multiplication and place value while they build strong peer relationships.

The variety of games I chose allow students to work on many skills and they will bring math alive and even make it fun. Thank you for helping us achieve these goals!
