My Students
This year, I have the pleasure of teaching a great group of second grade scholars. They come to school eager to learn more about the world around them and ask questions about what's going on in our world. With distance learning happening I have students who are at home without the materials they need to be successful in completing assignments or working with me while on Zoom calls.
These kiddos will come in the door ready to learn and have fun, despite their difficulties at home.
As a teacher in a Title I school, many of my students come from poverty-stricken, low-income homes. Some also are learning English as a second language and others have special needs.
All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Some of my students live in a shelter or motels or are living with other families.
My students will laugh, cry, hug, giggle, play, and learn all in one place: their classroom. Therefore, I am eager and ready to help them achieve their dreams.
My Project
When we are in the classroom, students have these basic materials to work during whole group and while in small group settings. WIth students being at home, I am meeting with them virtually. Right now I am the only one with a whiteboard to show how to complete math problems and I would love it if my students had one at home where I could see them answering and be able to see what strategies they are using correctly or incorrectly.
Also, some of my students are complaining they don't have the things they need to complete the work or have run out of materials because they have used them with previous work turned in.
I would like to give each student a drawstring backpack that contains a whiteboard, marker, pencils, paper, and crayons so that they may follow along at home. I see most of them each week as they drive through when we distribute work and daily meals. Those that I don’t, I can deliver them. I want to give my students every opportunity I can and these simple materials will be one way I can do that!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
