My Students

Artist and children's author Faith Ringgold has a motto: "If One Can Anyone Can All You Gotta Do Is Try." I want my students to be inspired by Faith Ringgold's message and her works of art.

My students amaze me with their creativity.

Unfortunately, due to lack of funding, my students to not have access to arts programs during their school day. For this reason, I am always on the search for ways to incorporate visual arts and music into what we are learning.

My Project

One of the final units of writing in second grade is an author study. Students study the life of an author, read their books, analyze their writing style, and finally, write their own original story in the style of that author. I love to choose the author Faith Ringgold for this project because she is an incredibly talented artist and storyteller. It is also powerful for my African American students to see writers and artists that look like they do. In order for my students to create their own writing modeled after the style of Faith Ringgold they will really need to understand who she is and how she writes. Watching a DVD about her life and work will be an engaging way to gain knowledge about her. Having multiple copies of some of her books will allow my students to be able to work in small groups to really appreciate her writing and artwork. Also, I will be able make connections to art by displaying her prints in our classroom.

Donating to this project will help me create an Author Study Unit that my second graders will never forget.

My students will be inspired to write after seeing and hearing Faith Ringgold's words and pictures.
