it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In a post COVID world, many of my students lack the foundations of learning. Although my students are in middle school, many of them do not know their alphabet and phonemic sounds, how to read or write basic sight words, or even comprehend basic directions. This new class of students entering middle school has proven to be a challenge for my colleagues and I. Starting with the basics, teaching my students the foundations of language, grammar, syntax, semantics, reading, and writing has shown to be a challenge as I am not equipped with the right materials to teach these 6th grade students.
Over the past few years, as COVID has affected our lives tremendously in many ways, it has affected the education of our students more.
During remote learning and after, our students did not get the support they needed to succeed and parents were not able to offer them more help, as they were working to provide for their families. These students were then not able to catch up to their peers and set back their learning abilities twofold. Young learners, especially those with developmental and learning disabilities, had to figure it out on their own, which only hindered their academic growth.
Now that we are back in school in a post COVID world, I am realizing the full effect this pandemic had on my students and the learning gap it has created. My students deserve the right support and materials (learning games, headphones, etc.) they need to succeed to strive in and outside of the classroom. They are our future and without the right tools and support to guide them, we are failing them. Please help me support and motivate my students to succeed!
