I teach nineteen 2nd graders who abilities range from gifted education to Early Intervention Program students. My students come from a different socioeconomic backgrounds. However, respect is a major focus of our classroom. Outside of academics, my students and I have worked to get to know each other. We take the time from instruction sometimes to share aspects of our family and personal lives. I want my students to know that we are all human and can relate to each other.
A sense of community is very important because I want my students to feel comfortable in my classroom as they enhance their talents.
It is my belief that teachers should embrace and teach the whole child. Sometimes the lesson you may teach is not in a book or on a lesson plan. My students love learning using a variety of materials. I have noticed that even though they are 21st century students, they often tire of staring at a screen. They enjoy board games, interactive manipulatives, cutting, and coloring.
I have been an advocate for VersaTiles kits since I first started teaching 14 years ago. I have watched how standards have been modified, removed, and moved up and down grade levels. My school currently have the same VersaTiles that were purchased when I first stated teaching. Many of the kits have books that are falling apart and are missing VersaTile pieces. Even though these material are really outdated, my students still love using them.
I would like for my students to have experiences with new materials that meet the changing requirements of our curriculum.
There are often years in between the times schools receive new materials. The children love new materials and they deserve it. They are so excited when they receive items that their class is the first to use.
