Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school is an urban middle school located in Queens, New York. The school is a 6th-8th grade middle school with 1,799 students. Student demographics are 51.64% Hispanic, 43.02% Asian, 2.11% White 1.67% Black, 0.61% American Indian, 0.56 % Native Hawaiian, and 0.39% Multiracial. Among the school population, 16% are English Language Learners, and 16% are students with Special Needs. In addition, 60% of our students are qualified for free lunch.

My co-teacher and I teach four 8th grade classes, each consisting of an integrated classroom setting.

Inclusion secures opportunities for students with disabilities to learn alongside their peers in general education classrooms. Based on a learning styles survey distributed at the beginning of the year, our students identified themselves as kinesthetic and visual learners, and have also stated they struggle with organization. We love that our students are aware of how they learn best, which is why we strive to incorporate lessons and strategies to best fit their needs. This year we are incorporating an interactive notebook into our classroom, and would like to incorporate more hands on activities in the classroom, in order to make this happen, we require some resources and materials.

My Project

Some of the resources requested are: highlighters, markers, folders, notebooks, scissors, glue sticks, and fidgets. All these supplies contribute to a year of projects aimed at their development and awareness of the world around them, past, present, and future. Our focus is American History and in class we often participate in hands on activities, these resources will contribute to activities such as time lines, comic strips, and argumentative essays.

Often times history is taught using primary and secondary sources which can be challenging for students, especially those with special needs.

Being that our students benefit from visuals and hands on activities, these materials will provide multiple outlets for students to demonstrate learning, for example: students can create a visual timeline, allowing for creativity in the classroom. Our students also have to complete two argumentative essays, one titled: "Should America support an open immigration policy or a restricted immigration policy?" To help students analyze these primary and secondary sources needed to support their argument, we will use different colored highlighters to highlight evidence supporting restricted immigration, and an open immigration policy. We also have implemented an interactive notebook in our classroom, this benefits the variety of learning styles in the classroom with student output activities give students the ability to show exactly where they are in their understanding of the subject.

These basic materials will make a big change in the classroom, so much time is wasted when students have to share a limited amount of supplies. More importantly, more supplies allows for opportunities for creativity in the classroom, providing access to a variety of learners.
