Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My co-teacher and I teach at the only public NYC high school that teachers fashion. We are a Title I school, meaning the majority of our students come from homes considered below the poverty line. We are in Chelsea, a beautiful part of Manhattan, and many of our students travel from far out in the boroughs of the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island to attend our school, getting up very early in the morning to ride the subway and fulfill their dream of being a fashion designer, model, artist, or business person.

We do our best in our 98 year old school to make our classroom colorful, engaging and comfortable.

We want our materials to be new, clean and make our students feel valued, important, and cared for. By having a new filing cabinet my co-teacher and I can keep our class materials clean and organized year to year, providing students with just the best worksheets to learn grammar and literature to pass the NYS Regents. Post-its are also key to their annotations as they study literary devices. A sturdy stool allows us to sit amongst our crowded room next to a student we are helping with work unobtrusively. Materials like Sharpies help us label items clearly and keep our room looking professional.

In our lessons, we focus on preparing students for the New York State English Regents, which is in January of junior year. We teach grammar, central idea, characterization and argument writing. We believe that teaching our students how to organize their thoughts and develop as critical thinkers will help them in their academic life, personal life, and as citizens in our city and country.
