Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are innovative dreamers. They don't want to just "go along" with future events, they want to help create it. Many of their parents crossed oceans and deserts to come here to have that chance, and they don't want to waste it.

Yes, it's true that many of my students come from low-income backgrounds; that they don't come from the best neighborhoods, but don't judge them by their zip codes or their parent's income brackets, these kids are going places, they just need your help.

My Project

My Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) students will use these materials to build and test a variety of engineering projects. Some materials, like the kits, will be used to teach students the skills to design and build projects using ready-examples. Specifically, the Balsa Bridge Building Kit, Trebuchet Kit, and Mousetrap Racer Assortment will be used in the fall semester to teach students basic construction and engineering skills.

Ultimately, students will apply the skills they learned and the raw materials provided to build their own original engineering projects.

These raw materials would include the balsa wood in the balsa craft pack, the bubble wrap roll, glue sticks, and sandpaper. These would be used for the construction of original projects, such as gliders, balsa wood bridges, and mouse-trap powered cars. These projects will ultimately compete against other MESA students in southern California.

While this is certainly not an exhaustive list of the materials and projects students will need to engage in, it certainly represents a start. Looking forward, future projects will look to incorporate digital technology into their projects. I'm extremely excited to see where our school's MESA program goes--keep checking in!
