This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine looking into a class of 20-25 students and knowing that they are all English Language Learners. This is virtually every classroom in which I work. They range from very little to moderate English and all need strong language support.

My students are among some of the most fascinating youngsters I have ever worked with.

They are 100% ESL (ESL students comprise 65% of the school population) and have a huge range of personalities, from fun to serious and everything in between. They have voracious appetites for learning and always want to learn something new! My students attend a public school in New Jersey. The school is located in a very high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Virtually all of the students I teach were born in another country and have come here with their families for a better life.

My Project

My students need several portable materials such as What's the Order? Sequencing Kit, Creating Sight-Word Sentences and Sequence and Write Story Tiles for use in Grade 1 ESL literacy centers. Financial struggles are common in most of their households and the purchase of books for personal reasons simply does not exist for most of my students. If I can provide for them by building an extensive collection of high interest educational materials, then I believe I can begin to help them become star students.

My Grade 1 ESL students come from homes that do not have much in terms of literacy materials and support.

This means that their classrooms need to be optimized for language learning. Fitting their needs will make each student become a star!
