This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a school social worker, I support all students in grades K4-5th grade at my school in Milwaukee. My school is located in an urban district where the majority of students come from low-income households. My students, in particular, come from very diverse backgrounds - there are over 10 languages spoken by families at my school! The diversity at my school is a beautiful strength, and it creates a unique opportunity for students to appreciate each others' differences and similarities. Many of my students face challenges inside and outside of the classroom, but despite these challenges, my students come to school with an excitement for learning.

My students are resilient, curious, funny, kind, and the future leaders of our community.

They enjoy learning and engaging in hands-on activities that have real-life applications. My role provides me with the opportunity to teach and practice social-emotional skills, team-building, conflict resolution, and coping skills. My goal is to work with students individually, in small groups, and in large groups to foster a healthy and positive school community where every student feels like they belong.

My Project

Sometimes during a school day, students experience strong emotions that may interfere with their learning. Because of this, students need to be taught social-emotional skills at school as well as academic skills in order to be set up for success in life. Therefore, my school will be implementing an "Eagle's Nest" - a room where students can "reset" after strong emotions so they are ready to return to the learning environment. Students in need will be escorted to the Eagle's Nest by a staff member where they will be taught how to use a variety of tools to develop their self-regulation skills. These tools will utilize different senses - a deep pressure vest, noise-cancelling ear muffs, physical activities like Yoga Cards and Sensory Stepping Stones, fidget items, scented dough and markers, and books about feelings. Students will be able to choose a calm-down strategy that works for them so they can calm down and return to the learning environment.

Providing this space for students to regulate their emotions will create a positive school climate where students feel supported and empowered.
