My students need boxes that will contain markers, colored pencils, and crayons to be able to complete graphs, diagrams and projects in their science class.
"I don't have any markers!" "How can I make different lines on this graph?" These are the questions that students ask when completing work in science class many times. During economic hardships some of the first items to go are luxury items like markers, crayons and colored pencils.
My students attend a school where 77% are on free and/or reduced lunch.
These students come to school already disadvantaged and then are expected to do well in all of their classes with the bare minimum from home. Many of the jobs in the county have been outsourced to other countries and parents are driving up to an hour away to find work. However, with gas prices being so high, any money that is considered extra is not necessarily used for items to help students achieve academically. My students want to do well. They want to turn in good quality work that is useful and has meaning for them when they get it back.
My Project
I want to be sure that my students have the necessary tools they need to succeed in class. I want to put together boxes that contain colored markers, crayons, colored pencils, tape and other items students need to complete work in my science class. I want students to have the opportunity to draw what they see in the microscope in color, graph their speed lines so they can identify which car was which and be able to create posters, books and drawings of various cells and colored notes for their learning. By providing students with what they need at their fingertips, they are more likely to complete the assignment, turn it in and feel successful which will lead to their enjoyment of the class and continued desire to learn about science in future grades.
When students cannot complete their work in class, they take it home, thinking they will complete it but many times forget about it, or do not have the materials they thought they had.
Typically the work becomes lost or torn and students become frustrated. Please help my students continue to be successful in class by giving them these supplies that will be at their fingertips for them to use in class for their assignments.
