My Students

My school district is located in rural Pennsylvania, many of our students receive free or reduced lunches and come from families of poverty or middle class.

My classroom is titled emotional/autism support and consists of a range of students. My students are diagnosed with autism, oppositional defiance disorder, intellectual disabilities, etc. Two of my students have lost their father before 3rd grade and come from very low income families. My students struggle with coping skills and managing emotions. They struggle with daily living skills that are not taught at home such as hygiene. We practice brushing our teeth and applying deodorant every morning. They require sensory breaks, movement, and pressure to succeed. Sometimes they just need a hug and other times they require lots of praise and encouragement. I want to provide them with every opportunity to succeed!

My Project

My students will use the folding mat to work on the floor on their stomach. Currently, my students are laying on the floor which at many times is cold to complete work. They enjoy the pressure of laying on their stomach and are more successful when doing so. The mat will also be used for privacy when a student is having difficulties coping. Many times this has happened in the hallway and other students will walk by the student laying on the floor crying. I would like to use the mat to create a divider so that the student's peers cannot see them having their melt down in the hallway to respect the child's privacy. It would be safer for the child than an actual divider due to the material of the mat.

Your donations will help my students succeed by allowing them to work on their stomach and allow them to be successful.

It will also allow the students to remain private in those difficult moments when peers are around.
