My Students

It is a pleasure being a middle school librarian! The almost 650 students who come through the library at any given time make it a delightful experience. They are "typical teens" in that they love to spend time with their friends, on their electronic devices and showing us adults how smart and independent they are growing each day. Helping them learn more about themselves and the world around them through books and online resources is truly rewarding!

I have learned to listen more, ask fewer questions and do whatever I can to meet my students' needs.

My Project

Take a picture--a picture book--that is, and let it make you smile

Reminisce about the feelings that you may not have had in a while

Remember the elation, the great sensations you uses to intimately know

The ones that you felt when reading as a young one

Oh, how your imagination did grow!

It was often the artwork-- the pictures--that primarily spoke to you as a child

The colors, the composition, the content... What imagery! Wow!

You may not have understood the words that were being read

So easily you were delighted as dinosaurs, dragons, people and places danced before your eyes and in your head

A foundation fortified with fundamentals like phonics and fluency and vocabulary was forming to make your intellect grow

Opinions about yourself and the world around you were being conceived

Your emotions-- anger-fear, joy-sadness, trust-distrust-- were starting to flow

In middle school, academic goals and benchmarks and other challenges are constantly trying to be met

We should let our childhood’s initial illustrated instructors know, “Hey! we’re not done with you yet!”

Let’s return to our roots, I say, reach out and reconnect with those times gone by and

Once again, give our precious picture books a try

That’s right! Picture books are not just for Pre-K students

They help readers of all abilities and ages create cross-cultural connections, initiate interdisciplinary inquiries and theorize thought-provoking themes

We have to get those visual and verbal narratives of painted pages back in the hands of our tweens
