We are a Title I school with a diverse population of students coming from all five boroughs of New York City.
The children in our classrooms are a mix of deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing children (most with deaf parents).
Although I am neither deaf nor hard-of-hearing, I am fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). Classroom instruction occurs in both ASL and spoken/written English, with two classroom teachers. We are a dual-language school dedicated to bridging the deaf and hearing communities.
My Project
Children's book author and educator Andrew Jordan Nance is visiting with our preschool classes! Andrew will read his book, Puppy Mind. In this picture book for children and adults (illustrated by Jim Durk, who is adored by thousands of children for his many Clifford the Big Red Dog and Thomas the Steam Engine books) a young boy discovers his mind is like a puppy, always wandering away, into the past or the future. He sets about learning to train his puppy mind to heel to the present moment. Through remembering to breathe, the boy becomes a stronger and more caring master of his puppy mind, keeping it in the present, if only for a moment.
This project was created so that each child can bring home an autographed copy of Puppy Mind.
Andrew will also lead a discussion about mindfulness and provide a few tips to help all of us master our puppy minds.
