My Students

My students are between the ages of 6 and 7. Though they are young, they act beyond their ages and seem to have missed out on the experiences a young child should have. I can tell that my students wish to just be kids and use their imagination. The students in my class and school are from a poor urban community that is exposed to violence and situations young children should not experience. Our school tries to provide our students with a positive and loving community for their learning experiences. Not only are my students getting an education, they are also learning how to be positive people in the world.

My Project

Since my students are in first grade, mastering basic math skills is very important. These items that have been chosen for this project to help my students work either independently or with a partner to improve their skills. By mastering their math skills at an early age, it will prepare them for them for more difficult multi-step problems.

They will really enjoy working with the puzzles and games because it is such a fun way to practice their math skills!

Also, the project includes items I can use to help model and teach the students! The magnet pointers, magnets, magnet stripes, and magnetic bins will all be used for teaching. This will allow me to color code my lessons and show the important elements of the lessons. I will also allow students to use these items when working in a small group to help each other with their math skills. Working hands-on in math class is a great way to learn and helps the students become engaged with their learning.
