My Students

My students are a unique bunch. I have sixteen kindergardeners in an impoverished, disenfranchised community within Memphis, Tennessee.

They are a sweet, smart group with such a great desire to learn.

That in itself is great, as the school I work in is considered to be in the bottom five percent in the state of Tennessee. It is the Achievement School District's goal to move these schools directly from the bottom five percent to the top twenty-five percent. This challenge requires hard work, smart work, and great love.

My Project

As a new kindergarten teacher, I need manipulatives and materials more suited for my new scholars. I chose Expo markers, LEGOs, and plastic links to help with lessons and centers involving number sense and patterns. The Expo markers will be used with white boards to demonstrate mastery, while the LEGOs and plastic links will be used in centers.

I want my scholars to have hands-on experience with math.

I believe the markers, LEGOs, and links will be just the right materials to help my scholars be successful in kindergarden math and beyond because these materials allow them to make math happen everyday!
