Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a teacher at a Title I school, I work with students from low socio-economic backgrounds who often lack access to essential learning resources, including novels and literary materials. I’m excited to kick off a literary adventure with my students. We’re diving into the fascinating world of Flannery O'Connor, a brilliant writer known for her unique Southern Gothic stories. To bring her works to life, I’m requesting a selection of novels, short story collections, and critical essays, along with post-its for annotating some art supplies for creative projects and discussions.

These materials will make a huge difference in my students' learning.

By exploring O'Connor’s complex characters and thought-provoking themes, they’ll sharpen their analytical skills and discover the beauty of storytelling. The novels will spark engaging classroom conversations, while the critical essays will help them think deeply and express their ideas on challenging topics. Plus, the art supplies will give them a fun way to creatively interpret what they’ve read.

My goal for this project is to ignite a love for literature and create a space where we can have open discussions about the moral dilemmas O'Connor often presents. I want my students to walk away from this unit not just as better readers and thinkers, but as empathetic individuals who understand different perspectives.

What makes my students special is their incredible curiosity and creativity. They come from diverse backgrounds, bringing unique experiences to our discussions. Despite facing personal challenges, they show resilience and a genuine eagerness to learn. By exploring O'Connor's world together, they’ll not only enhance their literary skills but also gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
