Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher in a high need, low economic school located in the Bronx, New York. I teach fifth graders who are highly receptive of manipulatives in the classroom and would greatly benefit from opportunities provided to them.

My students work hard and enjoy the process of learning. I've quickly learned that they enjoy and benefit from hands on activities and welcome any opportunity they can get to try an alternative to learning and will do their best. I teach a highly diverse group of fifth graders. Many of my students have worked hard and learned their multiplication facts, while others barely can skip count. My students have struggled in the past and we work hard to help them improve. Those struggling are showing steady improvement and have the desire to improve. They enjoy using manipulatives any given moment they can get. While the others who have mastered their facts would enjoy applying what they know with activities and games.

Here's what we need! We would welcome several sets of the Multiplication Wrap-ups. They easily accessible and promote learning quickly while promoting active engagement! The Wrap-Up is a key shaped piece of plastic with an attached string. Each key represents one factor, such as "times 1". The multipliers are listed down the left side of the key and the answers on the right. Students place the red string next to the multiplier, do the problem in their head, and wrap the string around to the answer. When they finish students key flip it over and check if the string pattern matches the etched pattern. If the strings and etches line up, they have correctly finished the key and can move on to the next one.

Learning Wrap-Ups are a lot of fun and especially effective for the child who must do and see in order to learn. Wrap-Ups are the perfect manipulative for the fidgety child. Wrap-Ups have the bonus of being inexpensive, durable and easy to carry around for practice away from home. Help make it accessible for us to learn our facts easily and simply!
