My Students

I work in a special education school in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NYC. We have children in our classrooms with various disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, and language delays. The majority of our students come from low income/high poverty neighborhoods and single-caregiver families.

Our school provides its students with small special education classes and extra support through therapy, counseling, and individualized attention so that they can reach their highest potential, as typical learning environments can be too challenging for them.

Our students need specialized instruction with adaptations and repetition to master even basic skills. It's important for our students to have authentic learning experiences with real-life experiences.

My Project

I have been creating individual therapy supply bins and teletherapy bags for the students I work with. These supplies will prevent my students from sharing materials with others, and help prevent the spread of germs. Items such as grip tongs and tweezers will help develop my student's fine motor skills needed for writing and activities of daily living (such as managing zippers and buttons on their clothing and opening lunch items).

Many of my students' masks become soiled easily throughout the day, and they cannot tolerate wearing masks for very long.

Having disposable masks available will ensure that we can keep our students and staff safe. It will also allow me to work on teaching my students how to put on and off their masks independently.

For my remote learners, sitting during online learning is very difficult for them. It is hard for them even when in the classroom! Providing some fidget toys will help support some of their sensory needs whilst learning. Having easy access to digital resources to share with my students at home negates the necessity to mail resources regularly to them via the post. None of my parents have printers so we have to rely on digital resources and the supplies I send them for successful learning. The use of dry erases pouches and markers also helps with reducing the number of resources students need at home as these items can be used over and over again.
