I teach 3rd Grade at a public elementary school in Southeast, DC. My school is centered in a community that struggles with high poverty, unemployment, homelessness, and crime rates. I have been teaching at this school for the past six years and keep coming back each year because of the spark I see each year in the eyes of my students. They are constantly growing, seeking more information about themselves, their community, and the world, They have big dreams of who they WILL become and are ready to work ten times harder to achieve those dreams.
"Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can." -Arthur AsheMy students are ambitious, motivated, hard-working students that come to school each day ready to take on the next challenge. In spite of the obstacles they face or the odds that have been stacked against them, they still push. Even after a pandemic that changed their lives forever, they still do everything they can to be the best version of themselves. They give all they have to give to be successful.
Recently, COVID numbers have returned to record highs! We have learned that the Omicron variant has impacted children more than any of the other variants. Even with social distancing precautions, students still have to be in close proximity to learn and collaborate. Research says that the most effective mask to wear to prevent the transmission of COVID is an N95. I wear my N95 each day, but it would make me feel better to know that my students are as safe as they can be as well! As most teachers do, I think of my students as my own kids. So anything that I can do to make sure they are as safe as they can be while they are in school, I am willing to do. I appreciate your support!
