Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are ages 8-9. The majority of my students are ELL (English Language Learners) whose parents work most of the day and into the evening. They spend most of their day in school, and in after-school programs. Sadly, my students do not get a lot of adult attention or support and come to school in need of emotional support as well as academic support.

The students that I have are hardworking, determined, grateful, and curious.

These are just a few words that describe the amazing young people that enter my classroom each day.

My students try to learn to the best of their abilities but need a lot of small group work. They are eager to learn, yet oftentimes when they leave here they no longer have the English support they need. I try to engage my students in the classroom as much as I can by providing a variety of activities and sending them with things to do at home to support the work we did in class. They are our future, and I want to give them a great start to their long, successful careers.

My Project

I've created a Family Math Game Weekend Homework to reinforce classroom learning at home and to strengthen important math skills. I know that a child's success in school is closely related to their parents' involvement in their education. The dice, spinners, counters, and playing cards will be sent home in their take-home folder along with a math game for them to practice their math skills at home. The journals will be used for writing a letter to me sharing their thoughts about the game.

These games will give students a resource to practice their learning at home.

For some parents, helping their children complete their math tasks can be daunting and stressful. My hope is that by using the take-home games every weekend, math homework can become fun and exciting for both parents and students. Games are a great way to involve family and give the student an opportunity to be the teacher and share what they know or have learned. Building confidence and sharing new, trending resources with families can and will get them excited about math and overall learning. Thank you for your help!
