Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a great school in the South Bronx where students come to school ready to learn despite their circumstances. Our school is located in a high-poverty area and many of our students live in housing projects, shelters, or in single-parent homes. Despite some of these struggles, our students see our school as their second home. They feel safe and loved by all of the staff. We are a true community of learners striving to be a little better each day. Purchasing new school supplies for a brand new school year is fun and exciting.

Unfortunately, many of the families at my school are unable to purchase all the supplies requested by teachers because they can't afford them or lack access to these supplies.

I want to relieve any stress from students and their families that can't afford school supplies and keep their focus on learning. They shouldn't come to school worrying about things like Post-Its, markers, pencils or paper.

My Project

I want to make sure my students have the math materials they will need to learn the mathematical concepts being taught to them with more ease. Multiplication, Division and Fractions are big concepts taught in 4th grade. The use of the unifix cubes will help them with comparison multiplication problems, the counters will help them to create arrays and solve division problems. Lastly, the fraction bars are a great visual for comparing fractions and creating word problems about fractions.

It's important that math is taught hands-on because most students are visual and kinesthetic learners.

Another great way to incorporate math concepts is through games. The board games and manipulatives I've requested will facilitate lots of games for my students.

These materials will definitely facilitate conversation, collaboration and give students some ownership on their learning. Please consider helping my fourth grade students succeed this upcoming school year!
