Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are in south Texas at a public elementary school of about 850 students PK-5. We are located in a coastal town, which has chemical plants and fishing industries. We have many migrant families due to lots of agriculture in our area, and contract work at the plants.

Over 70% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

As a result, many of them have had no exposure to a variety of life experiences, which would increase their knowledge. Last fall Hurricane Harvey wrecked havoc on our town and some families are still recovering. School is a "safe zone" for many still living in rough conditions, due to Harvey.

Our community includes a diverse group of cultures. We have Burmese refugee children, other Asian children whose parents work at the plants, African American, Hispanic and white students.

The students are very eager to learn and, for the most part, the parents want what is best for their child, no matter what. They may have limited income but they still try to help do whatever they can for their children. These students may be low income - but are eager learners who deserve the best education I can give them.

My Project

Our district has put a lot of emphasis on the importance of Math Fact Fluency. This workshop would give me the tools I need to be able to teach this concept in a fun and exciting way. I would be learning how to design intensive practice schedules implementing strategies focused on fluency with math facts. I would come back to my classroom with the tools needed to maximize student learning with Math facts. This conference provides powerful models for developing higher level thinking in students. It also provides help for struggling learners. The presenter is amazing with 23 years of experience!
