My Project

Math doesn't have to be boring, difficult, or upsetting. Math should be fun, challenging, and exciting! How can we enhance our math lessons? With math manipulatives!

My 26 fabulous fourth grade students would love 9 sets of magnetic place value discs.

After reading a book called, Building Thinking Classrooms, by Peter Liljedahl, we have been working at vertical whiteboards in groups of 3 to solve challenging, but fun, math problems. We have found that this type of activity really encourages thinking, teamwork, and collaboration.

We use place value disks in 4th grade a lot. Students thought it would be fun to add this magnetic manipulative to each whiteboard so that when they solve the problems they can physically manipulate these disks to find the answer. This concrete part of our learning will help connect to representational and abstract thinking. This will allow for equitable facilitation of our math lessons for all students in each group.
