My school is a public school located in Malden, MA. We are a K-8 school, with eight hundred and ninety-seven students currently enrolled. Students at this school come from a variety of economic backgrounds. About sixty-two percent of students come from low income families. Students also speak a multitude of languages such as English, Chinese, Spanish, French Creole and Portuguese. At our school, we recognize and celebrate our diverse students.
No matter what kind of background my students come from, they always come into the classroom with huge smiles on their faces, ready to learn.
My main goal to help my students love school. I strive to help them build that foundation to become life long learners. I want my students to always have positive memories of their year in kindergarten!
My Project
My kiddos are in need of hands-on math manipulatives to help them better understand mathematical concepts. All children learn best when they are engaged in visual and hands-on activities. These manipulatives will help my students to foster math concepts and have fun at the same time!
Students learn better when they're engaged and these math manipulatives would make it easy for my kiddos to get excited!
Manipulatives have become a classroom essential when teaching mathematics at the elementary school level. They can be used to introduce, practice or remediate a concept. Research has shown that using manipulatives in mathematics has a positive effect on student achievement by allowing students to use concrete objects to observe, model and internalize abstract concepts.
The Magna-tiles will be used for shape recognition, understanding sizes, as well as build critical thinking skills. My students will use the GeoStix to create their own shapes and they provide a hands-on exploration of planar geometry. The unifix cubes can be used to a variety of mathematical concepts! Unifix cubes can be used to demonstrate patterning, addition, subtraction, sorting, measurement, grouping and so much more!
The math manipulatives would also be a great way to help my English Language Learners better understand new concepts and be successful!
I absolutely love teaching math! I think introducing these manipulatives would help my students to love math as well.
