My Students

The high school engineering class I facilitate requires a great deal of innovation and patience. The innovation moment is the seed of an idea thrown into the light wind generated by student imagination. Once that seed of an idea begins to germinate, a student head wind begins to blow, but the facilitator must remain patient and somewhat aloof waiting for student interaction to dust-up the trail.

A student-led experiment is a storm of organized chaos.

At any given moment the leader of the team changes, giving way to the needs of the group. This is not a bad thing because everyone has something valid to say to effect a positive team result.

My Project

The Principles of Engineering class is on a virtual Journey to Mars. We have designed 3 dimensional (3D CAD) drawings, and fabricated paper geodesic dome models, Mars Expedition Habitats. Now we are building full-size foam board models inside the classroom. Solar panels will generate power to fans for movement of interior air.

We will be utilizing these full-size models for a multi-school art and design showcase in the Spring of 2017.

We will incorporate solar panels into the geodesic dome structure to power small fans for the interior living space. Our goal is to infuse engineering design into the world of art.
