My Students

My school is located in Woodside, New York, within the borough of Queens, which is known as one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the world, according to Guinness World Records. Approximately 85% of our students speak a language other than English at home, including over 30 different languages. About 30% of our students are English Language Learners.

My Project

Learning math in a classroom setting is sometimes difficult. Learning math at home remotely through a computer screen can be even more daunting. I ask my 4th graders not only to follow along in their workbooks as I model steps for them, but also to write, draw diagrams, illustrate, and color-code steps in their notebooks as we work through challenging problems together. We color-code steps so they can clearly "see" the problem and work through them to gain independence in basic skills and number sense. This is most helpful with word problems, multiplication, and long division.

I find that students learn and remember steps to solve complicated math problems when they can color-code and keep track of those steps for themselves.

Many students do not have markers, crayons, or colored pencils at home, so they try their best without these items. I hope to be able to provide each student with a pack of markers all their own, not only to color-code math problems, but to inspire their creativity in other academic areas, including literacy and history, as we all navigate our way through remote learning.
