Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do students who arrived in the United States weeks or months ago demonstrate grade level content mastery in English? By making posters of course!

I teach global history at a small high school in the Bronx.

One hundred percent of our students are recent immigrants to the United States, who arrive in the US speaking little to no English. Within the course of the two years (the length of the global curriculum) they must not only learn global history content but also learn enough English to pass the Regents examination! My objective in this class is to give students every opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned—verbally, visually, etc. One of the best ways I have found for students to demonstrate their knowledge is to have them create group posters. Group posters allow students at different levels of language acquisition to explain content to each other and for students who are not yet verbalizing in English to participate and show what they’ve learned. Such posters, however, require supplies such as markers, scissors and glue.

My Project

My students come from very high-poverty neighborhoods and they struggle to obtain even the most basic school supplies, like pencils and notebooks. By providing my students with these class packs of markers, scissors and glue sticks, you will make it possible for them to demonstrate what they have learned and achieve their fullest potential while in my classroom. Whether they write an explanation or draw a picture, they are showing that they have learned the content and are preparing themselves to be successful on the Global History Regents.

The use of these supplies on group posters, as well on other projects, provides students with a preparation for college level work as well as a positive educational experience that will inspire them to continue their academic success beyond high school.

You will help my students achieve their fullest potential by providing these much needed classroom supplies!
