I teach 6th grade English as a Second Language (ESL) in a very poor area of Brooklyn, New York. My students come from all different countries around the world, such as Haiti, Panama, Mexico, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Bangladesh. I would like to have a class set of 9"x12" dry erase marker boards for my class. These marker boards come with a board, a dry erase marker, and an eraser for each student. The reason I want these marker boards for my class is to ensure that each student is participating in class discussions. For example, many times I have a thrown a question out to my class, and a few students answer it. I assume that the class is ready to move on based on the answers I got, but the truth is that most of the students didn't say anything. Writing responses to questions on marker boards was an idea that an instructor gave me at an after-school professional development meeting. Having students write answers on a dry erase board, and then hold the board up, ensures that each student is thinking and participating in the class discussions. This technique makes sure that no student is "slipping through the cracks," and, not to mention, it's fun for the students! Marker boards would be great for my class, not only during the ESL period, but also for math, social studies, science, and any other subject. They would encourage all students to participate in class, even if they're shy or scared to speak. They are definitely something I would use for the remainder of this school year and for many school years to come. Please help my students communicate more effectively with marker boards!
