I teach an innovative program that has been going for 35 years. The program, Marine Environmental Studies, gives students "hands on" experience doing research on Narragansett Bay. We have a 20' Boston Whaler and a bus from which we conduct ottertrawls, plankton studies, saltmarsh mapping, bullraking, beach profiles, studies of the rocky shore and numerous other activities including work with Save the Bay. The students LOVE coming to marine class and actually take it as an "extra class".

When we do our research, we need to record an accurate location of the area. For example, when we drag the ottertrawl in the bay, we should be recording precisely where we are. We are also involved with URI and a horseshoe crab survey which would benefit from a GPS unit for recording the location of the crabs. Perhaps the most important, a GPS is needed for safety purposes on the boat.

The Garmin GPS 440 would really help the students become more proficient in technology and help them be involved in "real" research. Without the location of our studies, they have little value for other organizations. Students will Learn so much with a GPS. Even the geography they will learn will be incredible!

Your help with a GPS will ensure that my students will be able to produce valid research and learn at the High School level how to conduct research that most students do only as graduate students in college. How awesome is that??
